PGA Championship winner, Austin’s Rich Beem, PGA Tour teachers Dallas’ Randy Smith and Houston’s Jim Hardy along with U.S. Men and Women’s Open and annual PGA Tour site Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth are among the 2011 Texas Golf Hall of Fame inductees.

Located at the historic Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio, The Texas Golf Hall of Fame elected its class of inductees after more than 40 nominations in six categories. They will be inducted at a gala and dinner on October 10, 2011 at the San Antonio Country Club.

“I’ve been fortunate to win multiple PGA Tour events and a PGA Championship, but I can’t think of a nicer or more meaningful honor than to be inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame,” Beem said. “It’s very special to be honored with so many of my golf heroes.” Few will forget Beem defeating Tiger Woods in the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine National. He also won two other PGA Tour events.

Other inductees include Don Addington of Dallas in the Amateur Category. Addington began his career winning the National Caddy Championship in 1948, he was a state champion in high school, and played in several U.S. Amateur championships. He was the 1956 Air Force Champion, the Four States Amateur Champion, the six-time Texas Senior Championship, and has twice won the World Father-Son Championship with his son Rob, the executive director of the Texas Golf Association.

Ms. Marty Leonard of Ft. Worth was inducted for Distinguished Service. She is the daughter of Colonial’s founder, Marvin Leonard, an accomplished golfer, a former USGA senior committee member and award-winning volunteer and board member of many golf and other organizations and operates her own course, Starr Hollow, outside of Fort Worth. In November, she will receive the Texas Golf Association Foundation’s annual award, also for distinguished service.
“Texas golf has been special to me since my dad took me out to my first Lone Star course as a young child. This would make him very happy, as it does me,” Leonard said.

Jim Hardy and Randy Smith were elected in the Club Professional category. Hardy has been teaching for over 40 years, has been a Golf Magazine contributor, an analyst for NBC and ESPN and is an accomplished author. He has coached dozens of well-known PGA Tour and LPGA players. Smith is the all-time PGA of America leader in national awards and was inducted into the PGA of America’s Hall of Fame in 2002. A coach to Justin Leonard and Harrison Frazer, Smith has mentored many amateur players, including 13 NCAA All-Americans and over 100 who have received golf scholarships.
“Having grown up in West Texas and worked in the state my entire life, I can think of no higher honor than to be inducted,” Smith said. “I’m sure I’m not worthy of this honor.”

Colonial Country Club was elected to the Texas Registry of Historic Golf Courses during Colonial’s 75th anniversary year. The home-course of Ben Hogan and the Ben Hogan Exhibit, Colonial hosted the U.S. Open in 1941, the 1975 Tournament Players Championship, the 1991 Women’s U.S. Open and The Colonial Invitational is the second oldest event on the PGA Tour to be located at the same venue.

The Pioneer Category welcomes Ralph Plummer, a noted architect, and San Antonio’s four-star General Bernard Schriever – both deceased. Plummer was a prolific golf course architect who had a hand in nearly 90 courses, including all three Texas courses where the U.S. Open has been played (Colonial in 1941, Northwood in 1952 and Champions in 1969).

Schriever grew-up in a small house on hole #12 at Brackenridge Pack. He and brother, Gerhardt, were best friends with young Tod Menefee and the Schriever’s mother opened a small but popular sandwich stand for the golfers in the back yard. Bernard went on to win the State Junior and the San Antonio City Championship twice. He captained the Texas A&M golf team for two years before entering the Army. He is most known as the architect for the Air Force’s space and missile program, and managing the nuclear arsenal during the Cold War. In 2003, he was recognized with the military’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
“We are delighted with the 2011 class and I want to thank the Selection Committee for their efforts and diligent work”, said Buddy Cook, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame’s Board Chair.

The induction will take place on October 10, at the San Antonio Country Club. Earlier that day at Brackenridge Park Golf Course, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame’s “Walk of Fame” will be dedicated. Ticket information for the events, sponsorships and additional information about the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and Museum can be found at www.texasgolfhof.org.

April 19, 2011: A life-sized bronze statue of Harvey Penick has been donated to The Texas Golf Hall of Fame and Museum at the historic Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio. Long time golf coach at the University of Texas at Austin and head golf professional for over 50-years at the Austin Country Club, Penick was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 1979. The statue is a gift from the Austin Country Club and GolfSmith, Inc. of Austin, and is located inside the great-room of the Brackenridge Park Golf Course clubhouse.
“This is a terrific and very significant new artifact for our museum. I’d like to thank Joe Black, Dale Morgan and the Board of the Austin County Club, and GolfSmith for this statue. Mr. Penick is a true reflection of the greatness of our Hall of Fame members”, said Buddy Cook, Board Chairman of The Texas Golf Hall of Fame.
Penick coached the UT golf team to 21 Southwest Conference championships, including 20 of 23 seasons from 1932 to 1954. As UT golf team members or golf students at the ACC, Mr. Penick taught some of the greatest names in Texas golf history and members of the World and Texas Golf Hall of Fames. Among them were Sandra Palmer, Betsy Rawls, Kathy Whitworth, Mickey Wright, Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite. Other students who have done well as professionals were Judy Kimble, Terry Dill, Don and Ric Massengale. Those are the professionals but there were literally thousands of students from across the country who were influenced by Mr. Penick’s teaching. Also, some of the great golf teachers and instructors of this generation were “Harvey’s Disciples”.

Much of Mr. Penick’s fame was a result of his best-selling book, “Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book, Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf”, which was published in 1992. The Little Red Book became an instant best seller and is located on most golfer’s book shelves today. In 1993, Mr. Penick partnered with GolfSmith, Inc. of Austin for the establishment of the Harvey Penick Golf Academy – which is still a teaching academy to this day.
Who can ever forget the 1995 Masters which started two days after Mr. Penick’s death. Both Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw had been pall-bearers at the funeral in Austin and some questioned whether they would be able to compete. Instead, Ben won the tournament with a very emotional finish in his caddy’s arms. At the post –tournament press conference, Ben said he had a 15th club in his bag that week – Harvey’s memory.
In the near future, additional museum components will be constructed by the Hall of Fame at the clubhouse and historic Borglum Studio.

The Texas Golf Hall of Fame and Museum is a 501(c)(3) and Texas non-profit corporation.

Major Championship winners from both the PGA and LPGA Tours, Fort Worth’s Mark Brooks and The Woodlands Carol Mann, highlight the 2010 list of 10 inductees for the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.

Major Championship winners from both the PGA and LPGA Tours, Fort Worth’s Mark Brooks and The Woodlands Carol Mann, highlight the 2010 list of 10 inductees for the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.
The two longtime Texans, who captured the 1996 PGA Championship and 1965 U.S. Women’s Open, respectively, will join several other inductees at a gala induction ceremony, Monday, Oct. 25 in San Antonio, the site of the new Texas Golf Hall of Fame.
Joining Brooks and Mann will be outstanding amateur Carolyn Creekmore from Dallas, El Paso teacher and Fort Worth native Bill Eschenbrenner. Golf historian Frances Trimble from Houston will also be inducted.
Longtime pro Warren Cantrell from San Antonio, amateur standout Fort Worth’s Toni Weiser, San Antonio golf pioneer Will Symons, Sr., and Dallas golf writer Harless Wade will be inducted posthumously. Dallas’ Brook Hollow Golf Club was selected in the historic course category.
This will be the first induction ceremony since the Texas Golf Hall closed before the 1997 induction. Members of the ’97 class will be officially honored including Dallas’ Lee Elder, and Austin’s Morris Williams, Jr. Dallas’ Cedar Crest was the course honoree.
“We are thrilled with such a great class of 2010 inductees to the Texas Golf Hall of Fame,” said TGHOF Chairman Buddy Cook. “Texas has always been golf’s most historic state and with these new inductees, in our great new facility at Brackenridge Park in San Antonio, this is a perfect.”
Nominees came from the general public and members of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame Executive Committee. Final ballots were casted by the executive committee.
Mann captured 38 LPGA events including the Women’s Open and the 1964 Western Open, when it was considered a major championship.
She was in the top 10 of the LPGA Money List nine times between 1965 and 1975. A longtime resident of The Woodlands, she was honored as the LGPA First Women of Golf in 2008 by the tour organization.
“I am humbled and honored,” said Mann of her early Wednesday phone call to tell her about the pending induction. “You don’t win honors from your fellow pros, but to be recognized like this is very special and exciting.”
Along with his playoff victory in 1996 at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, in Louisville, Kentucky, Brooks, a former University of Texas star, lost in a U.S. Open playoff in 2001 at Southern Hills Golf Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Creekmore and Weisner, both dominated the women’s amateur ranks, first in Texas and then nationally. Cantrell, the former PGA of America President, was instrumental in getting the 1968 PGA Championship to Pecan Valley in San Antonio, the only one of golf’s major championships to be held in South Texas.
Eschenbrenner first worked in Fort Worth, but moved to El Paso in the 1960s where he guided several pros onto the PGA Tour including Lee Trevino and Rich Beem.
“You can put it down, that he is responsible for Lee Trevino getting his PGA Card and getting on the tour in May, 1967,” Trevino said upon learning the news. “That is great, just wonderful. Pros like Bill are the backbone of the PGA of America.”
Harless Wade was a longtime golf writer with the Dallas Morning News while Trimble is a Texas golf historian, book author and journalist.
In the Class of 1997, Elder was the first black golfer to play in the Masters and Ryder Cup. Williams was a brilliant amateur killed in a military training accident.
The Texas Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, a 501(c) (3) organization, is located at the Brackenridge Park Golf Course clubhouse and a historic building adjacent to the clubhouse, the Borglum Studio.

The Board of Directors of the recently reconstituted Texas Golf Hall of Fame and Museum has appointed Reid E. Meyers as its Executive Director.

The Texas Golf Hall of Fame, formerly located at The Woodlands, TX, was reconstituted late last year with a statewide board of directors. The fifteen member board, comprised of officials from the Texas Golf Association, the two Texas Sections of the PGA of America, San Antonio’s Municipal Golf Association-SA. and other golf officials, including two former members of the USGA’s Executive Committee and the LPGA Hall of Fame, made the decision to hire Meyers after six months of organizational planning.

“Mr. Meyers has the right passion and vision for this project and, without a doubt, he is a man of action. We are delighted that Reid has accepted this role,” said Buddy Cook, Board Chairman of the Hall of Fame. Agreeing with Cook, Hall of Fame Honorary chairman and former president of the PGA of America, Joe Black stated, “Reid is the right choice to jump-start our efforts.”

From the mid-1970s to the late 1990s, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame inducted 77 Texans into the Hall of Fame. From Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, and Babe Zaharias, to Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame includes more great names than any other state golf hall of fame. The Texas Golf Hall of Fame and Museum will hold its first new class induction at a gala ceremony on October 25, 2010 at the Brackenridge Park Golf Course.

Meyers, a San Antonio employment law attorney, has been a golf industry leader since 1992. He was president of the San Antonio Golf Association (now known as Golf San Antonio), operator of the Valero Texas Open from 1996-98 and continues to serve on its Executive Committee. During his term as SAGA’s president, the organization initiated The First Tee program and proposed plans to renovate the Brackenridge Park Golf Course clubhouse. He was also involved in the name change to Golf San Antonio and the hiring of longtime Golf San Antonio CEO, Tony Piazzi. More recently, Meyers was tapped by city of San Antonio officials to form and chair the Municipal Golf Association-SA, d.b.a. The Alamo City Golf Trail, which took-over the operation of San Antonio’s municipal golf courses in 2007. In 2008, under Meyers’ leadership, the MGA-SA restored Brackenridge Park to its original A.W. Tillinghast design.

“I am deeply honored to have been offered this opportunity from the Hall of Fame Board. We have an opportunity to create a very special place at Brackenridge Park and, with the help of our Board and golf history lovers from across the state and nation, we will succeed,” Meyers said.

Meyers is married to Dr. Ann H. Meyers, Vice President of Haven for Hope in San Antonio. They have two daughters.

The Texas Golf Hall of Fame and Museum will be located at the Brackenridge Park Golf Course clubhouse and the Borglum Studio.
