Don Cherry

Cherry goes beyond his success in the disparate fields of golf and singing. He was a family man. His closes friends were Dean Martin, Phil Harris, Jimmy Demaret, Bobby Layne, and Mickey Mantel – all were noted imbibers, but Cherry never smoked or drank. He is a self-described introvert, yet has made his living on stage singing. Despite his friendly personality, Cherry had a temper on the golf course.

Don Cherry won “about eighty” amateur tournaments, including the 1953 Canadian Amateur and played on two Walker Cup teams. He finished 9th in the 1960 U.S. Open. Cherry played on the Tour from 1962 until 1978.

George H.W. Bush

The Walker Cup is a golf trophy contested biennially in odd numbered years between teams comprising the leading amateur golfers of the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. The event, officially called the Walker Cup Match, is co-organized by the R&A and the United States Golf Association, and is named in honor of George Herbert Walker (grandfather and namesake of the former President of the United States George H. W. Bush and great-grandfather of former President George W. Bush), who was president of the USGA in 1920 when the series was initiated.

Unlike the Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup has never been expanded to make all European amateur golfers eligible to compete. There is little present competitive reason to do so: although the United States leads the series 34 to 7, with one halved match, through 2009, the two teams have been far more evenly matched in recent decades. Starting with the 1989 Match in which Team GB&I ended Team USA's eight-match winning streak, Team USA lead by only 6–5. The 1989 Match and the three matches between 2003 and 2007 were all decided by one point. “41”, as he is known, has been a major supporter of the national First Tee organization and has been it’s Honorary Chairman since its inception in 1997.
