A.J. Triggs
Biography
Triggs, a longtime member of Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler, is perhaps best known for his volunteer work in giving back to the game. However, during his competitive career Triggs compiled one of the state’s most impressive amateur records. He captured an amazing 55 tournament titles and was a key member of the North Texas State’s Mean Green machine that won consecutive NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships from 1949 and 1950. The team also won in 1951 and 1952, after Triggs’ graduation.
His great love of the game was reflected in his many years of service in the Texas Golf Association; two terms as president and 30 years on the Board of Directors. He served 11 years on the Sectional Affairs Committee of the USGA and was an advisory board member of the Northern Texas PGA. He received the "Byron Nelson Award" in 1988 from the PGA for contributions to Amateur Golf. An annual Tyler tournament is named "The A. J. Triggs, Jr. Cup" and "Triggs Trace" is a street within Cascades Golf Club due to his two tournament wins of the Briarwood Invitational. His passion, love and respect for the honor and integrity of the game of golf culminated with his induction into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.
