Biography
Donald Albert Weibring, Jr. has spent more than a half century contributing to the game as a college golfer, course designer, facility operator, PGA Tour winner and ultimately, a major champion.
Born in Quincy, Illinois his midwestern roots run deep. A standout player at Illinois State University D.A. turned professional in 1975. While preparing for the 1976 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in Brownsville D.A. visited a cousin in Texas and was captured by the Lone Star State. In the Spring of 1977 D.A. qualified for the tour and by October of the next year he'd adopted Texas as his home state. Almost immediately after becoming a Texan success came calling.
In July of 1979 D.A. won the first of his three titles at what is now known as the John Deere Classic. He would have to wait 8 years for his second win, though he came close in a couple of playoffs and won overseas on two continents. His second win also came in the midwest when in 1987 D.A. won the Western Open, one of the most prestigious championships in the game. Battling through injuries D.A. showed his mettle at the game's biggest events as well earning top ten finishes in all four majors in a two year stretch in the mid to late 80's.
With the pain from his injuries and a curious nature, D.A. started a golf services business and successfully managed, designed and built an impressive number of golf facilities throughout Texas, the country and internationally. He also used his popularity to help children through philanthropy in the form of the Weibring Family Foundation and a long running charity tournament bearing his name.
On Tour and beyond D.A. was enormously popular and his easy going personality made him the perfect partner for hyperactive funnyman golfer Peter Jacobsen as they entertained countless golf fans with their humor filled golf clinics that got their start early on when Bob Hope noticed their act and promoted them relentlessly.
As he approached 50 D.A. was enjoying the business side of golf and the joys of family life with his wife Kristy and kids Matt, Katey and Allison. The Senior Tour was a distant thought but D.A. gave it a try, ultimately. A win in his rookie season was gratifying, another the next year was validating, but there was yet another the next season before two more culminating with his first major championship in 2008, the Senior Players Championship.
For almost 50 years D.A. Weibring has been tireless in his many roles within our game as ambassador, businessman, entertainer and competitor making his adopted home state proud every step of the way.

Full Circle with Illinois State University
D.A. played college golf at Illinois State University, where he distinguished himself as both a student and an athlete. After graduating, he continued to support his alma mater and the Redbird Men's and Women's Golf Teams. And in 2000, it was Weibring/Wolfard Golf Design that was chosen to renovate the University Golf Course. D.A. has been such an influence at I.S.U. that in 2007, the course was renamed to honor him.
A Promise Became a Win That Became TPC Deere Run
With a nudge from his son, Matt, D.A. returned to the Quad Cities for wins in 1991 and 1995. The latter win came at a time when the tournament was looking for a new sponsor, John Deere was getting into the golf business, and D.A. was talking to John Deere about building a golf course. The stars aligned and resulted in the construction of TPC Deere Run and to Deere & Company becoming one of the PGA Tour's longest-term sponsors.
Moving to Texas - "Who Knew We Would All Be in The Hall of Fame?"
After moving to Texas in the late 70's, the first two local golf pros D.A. met were Ronny Glanton and Randy Smith (who worked for Buddy Cook at Royal Oaks C.C.). Now all 4 men and Royal Oaks are Texas Hall of Famers!
